“The Northland redevelopment will be a mixed- use pedestrian friendly vibrant community. I work with planning commission, arts commission, City Centre board, I’m constantly talking about place making and repurposing projects. This is a great opportunity to create a vibrant, mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly community,” states Director of Planning, Terry Croad.
“This is all about retention and attraction for people to live here, work here, to increase our tax space so we can afford to hire more people to give raises and to give a quality of life.We have an opportunity to reshape the next 50-60 years of that space,” Croad continues, “our master plan is called Sustainable Southfield—economic, social and environmental sustainability.”
“Northland can be another pocket of the city, like the DDA, City Centre, and SmartZone; all have their own identity but are part of a bigger community. With Northland, we have to ‘plant the petunias’, i.e., do some simple things to liven up the space and make it green and community friendly. No one is trying to create a downtown, people want, a walkable pedestrian friendly sub area by where they go to work or school. Our projects can be more focused on things like walk able green space, storm water management, and infrastructure. ”
